Stop measuring clicks on the #WhatsApp hashtag as conversions. I’ll explain why.

Measuring the real ROI of campaigns targeting WhatsApp is one of the biggest challenges for any performance manager. The reason is simple: WhatsApp is a closed environment, a black box that our pixels and online tracking systems can’t penetrate.

The easy and wrong way is to measure the “click” on the wa.me link as a conversion. This gives us a false sense of success, but it’s actually a vanity metric that inflates results and leads us to make bad decisions.
Here’s the real problem, broken down:

A Click Is Not a Lead: A user (or a bot) can click, see the pre-loaded message on WhatsApp, and close the app without typing a single word. If we count that click, we’re recording “conversions” from people who never showed any real interest. Or worse, clicks generated by bots. We’re optimizing our campaigns toward a valueless event.

The Attribution Break: The moment the user leaves the browser to open WhatsApp, we lose track of them. The click from Google Ads or Meta is orphaned. The conversation that follows, which is where the real lead is generated, happens in an “offline” universe for the platforms. There’s no native way to tell them: “Hey, remember that click from 5 minutes ago? It just became a qualified lead.”
