Tag Manager events without Analytics for WhatsApp Widget

ChatWith.IO: tracking in Google Ads using Google Tag Manager [Implementation Guide] WITHOUT ANALYTICS

This guide assumes you are integrating with Google Ads and already have an account in it. This guide also assumes you have already set up the “Conversion linker” and the “Google Ads – Google Tag” tags.

Tochat.be widget can send interaction events to the data layer. You can capture these using Google Tag Manager and forward them to Google Ads. Please follow the steps below to achieve proper tracking:

Prerequisite(s):

  • You must have a Google Tag Manager account. If you do not have one, you can open one here: https://tagmanager.google.com/
  • You must have a Google Ads account. If you do not have one, you can create one here: https://ads.google.com/
  • You must have a conversion goal set up in Google Ads account. If you do not have one, define a goal in your Google Ads account:

If you prefer to skip the step by step process, you can download this file and import it in your Google Tag Manager. Then update the conversion tag to utilize your Google Ads conversion ID and conversion label as outlined in steps 1.d. and 4.c.

Steps to configure the conversions event:

1. Get Goal information from Google Ads account:

1.1. Navigate to the Goals menu:

1.2. Click on the name of the goal to enter its details:

1.3. Scroll down to the Tag Setup box, and collapse it, then click on the Use Google Tag Manager option:

1.4. Copy and paste the two values as shown in the image:

2. Create variables:

2.1. Navigate to the appropriate Workspace, open the Variables menu and click the New button:

2.2. Create the following custom variables with Data Layer Variable, type being Version 1:

Note: Please copy and paste Data Layer Variable names as provided in this guide. These are case-sensitive. If you fail to do so, your tracking will not work.

3. Create a trigger:

3.1. Navigate to the Triggers menu and click the New button:

3.2. Create the following Custom Event trigger with the event name chatwith:

4. Create a tag:

4.1. Navigate to the Tags menu and click the New button:

4.2. Select the tag type Google Ads: Google Ads Conversion Tracking:

4.3. In this step, you must populate the information from your conversion event (refer to step 1.d. above):

4.4. Set a trigger created in step 2 for the tag:

Don’t forget to publish your changes to GTM container after testing by pressing the Submit button. You are done. Good luck!
