Why should you secure your WhatsApp account?

You use WhatsApp for private messaging, with your parnter, family, friends or you conduct business through the app. Sometimes people even pass confidential data through the digital communicators. As things happen in life, an unfortunate event such as theft might occur, the thief will gain access to your chats upon hacking the phone or someone may use phishing to steal your SIM card. Thankfully there are various ways to protect your private data.

Two step verification

This is a process which requires user to double verify before gaining access to the account. It’s very good at preventing unauthorized access by adding extra protection, you have to type a 6-digit PIN in order to access your WhatsApp account. This will prevent a thief from accessing your chats even if he breaks into the phone itself.

To enable two step verification:

  • open WhatsApp on iOS or Android
  • proceed to settings
  • go to “account”
  • Choose two step verification and tape “enable”

Tap "Enable."

Now you will be prompted to setup the accesss code

Type a six digit pin and tap "Next."

After setting up the access code, WhatsApp will ask you to disclose an email, this part is important because in case you forget your PIN, you will be able to reset it using your email. For maximum security do not use the same email, you are constantly logged in with on your phone.

Type your email address, and then tap "Next."

Finger print or face ID

If you don’t like memorazing codes, or you simply don’t want to type it everytime you want to write a message, you might use fingerprint or face ID to unlock the App. If you already use one of these methods to unlock your phone, it would be advised to mix them and use the other to keep your WhatsApp safe.

To use fingerprint access:

  • Go to settings
  • Go to “account”
  • proceed to privacy
  • Toggle the switch on
  • At the end you will be asked to scan your finger

Toggle-On "Unlock with Fingerprint."

In order to setup the Face ID access:

  • Go to settings
  • Go to “account”
  • Go to privacy
  • Proceed to “Screen Lock”
  • Toggle the switch to enable Face ID
  • You will have a possibility to change the length of time after which WhatsApp will require verification after exiting the app

Toggle-On "Require Face ID."

Disappearing messages

In case you would have to pass delicate data through WhatsApp, for instance some bank account details or any kind of passwords, and you know the recipient will only need it once, the best way to do it is through a disappearing message which will be completely erased from your chat history after the set time.

To set up a disappearing message:

  • go to chats
  • tap the name of the contact or group
  • select disappearing message

Disappearing messages option on WhatsApp

Toggle the switch to enable the disappearing message, when enabled a timer will be displayed next to the name

Keep in mind the recipient can still screenshot the message, and store it on their phone, thus you should only send vulnerable data using this way to trusted people. After the set time message will be erased automatically both from your and the recipients chats.
